It is hard to give you an informed opinion when you are vague on what he wrote to you. If it is personal, I know we all understand that you want to keep it to yourself.

Being that the pattern is well established that at the first sign of conflict he takes off, what I think is needed for the two of you is pre-marriage counseling.
He does love you, but doesn't know how to communicate. He may have been severely punished by his parents as a child for voicing his opinion and the only way that he may know how to deal with conflict is to leave.

By not making the first move to kiss you goodnight, he might have wanted to see if you really were into him by you initiating the goodnight kiss.
